In Defense of the Summer Scarf

Yeah yeah yeah, so it’s 98 degrees outside (and your electric bill–if it’s anything like ours–is starting to look like a zipcode), but some of the most awesome seasonal accessories are just plain impractical. So, we offer you this meditation on the “summer scarf”–one of our favorite, if slightly paradoxical summer accessories–but also caution you against wearing any this week, because let’s face it: your stylish self might pass out on the sidewalk.

Independence Day Dressing

We were so pleased that top designers rolled out some fabulous “star spangled” options this season, because we’re always a bit hung up about what to wear on the Fourth of July. While we don’t exactly want to walk out of the apartment looking like we put a belt around the American flag, we don’t want to be party poopers, either.

Valentine Pick: McQ

may not have the fanciest of Valentine’s Day plans–we’re making macaronni and cheese was watching Twin Peaks– but isn’t it fun to take a peek at all the pink and red dresses anyhow? Designers will often produce one-off pieces just for the occasion, and while we may not have the budget for, say, Donna Karan’s latest, we can certainly fantasize about this more affordable option from Alexander McQueen’s mega-hip diffusion line, McQ.

Holiday Head Gear

There’s nothing like a bit of fanciful head gear to complete a theatrical holiday look. Unless you’re a member of the Gossip Girl cast, we doubt you’ll find much use for this prep school staple in your daily wardrobe. However, we feel that half the fun of fashion is getting all glitzed up and wearing something just this side of ridiculous when the occasion calls for it.

Perfect Yoga Pants

Breaking style news this may not be, but we’ve had a hankering for new and improved ensembles to wear to our bi-weekly yoga classes. Usually packing our “gym bag” (a plain canvas tote with a grocery store logo) means throwing the oldest t-shirt and least embarrassing pair of pajama pants we can find in a zip lock with a box of soap and some deodorant. We’ve heard the yoga snobs snigger behind our backs, doing “lotus pose” on their 100% biodegradable mats–but no longer. Next class, we’ll be showing up in a sick new pair of Nike Dri-Fit Knit Knot Yoga Pants, and they’ll have to just “om” away their jealousy, thanks very much.

Smart Feet

We suffer from freakishly cold and often completely numb toes during the winter months. As a result, we have what we consider a very reasonable tendency to complain–loudly–to anyone within earshot that our feet are frozen, and might they spare an ice pick to help chip the frost off our toenails? One concerned and possibly fed-up friend (who also happens to be a triathlete) generously clued us in to his winter training secret: smartwool socks. We generally believe it’s best not to question triathletes–who knows what super hero level wrath you might inspire–so naturally we ordered up some smartwool that very same day.

Trend Watch: Mesh Cut Outs

It’s back to school season, after all, and this year designers were appropriately academic in their choice of fall inspiration. Not in a plaid jumper and peter pan collar sense, but more in a We-Passed-Multivariable-Calculus-and-Design-Clothes-with-Texas-Instruments kind of way.
